Creative thoughts and innovation in change

The difference between tidal currents and tidal currents in the west coast of South Korea is severe.
Hyundai Engineering & Construction has implemented a reclamation project that blocks the sea and creates land by stacking seawalls.
It is a seawall with a vast area of 155.37 million square meters and a total length of 7686 meters. Now, due to this construction, it has become a paradise for migratory birds inhabited by migratory birds.
The final challenge was water barrier construction. At the end of 1983, the last remaining construction section for the seawall construction was a problem.
The remaining length of the construction began to have problems from 270m. The difference between the tides was 9m, so the sea water was strong.
Even a large boulder weighing more than 4.5 tons could not be closed due to a rapid current of 8 m/s that was swept away in an instant.
The people in charge of the construction told the impossible stories from here and there. Construction officials reported to Hyundai Chairman Chung Joo-young as follows.
"Even using all the latest equipment is useless." “Even if I ask the academic world and ask for consulting from a foreign construction company, it is all helpless.”
Considering the direct report to Chairman Chung Joo-young, the person in charge is considered to be a person in a considerable position at the company. It is highly likely that he is from an elite graduate or higher than a college graduate or has studied at an overseas university.
Hyundai Group Chairman Chung Joo-young, who has graduated from elementary school, said, "How about sinking a big boat?" The person in charge of the construction objected, saying that nothing has been verified yet.
Hyundai Chairman Chung Joo-young said this. "Hey, have you tried it?" If you follow the theory you learned at school, you can't do all the construction in the world. "Find a way to sink the tanker immediately".
February 24, 1984. The seawall was connected using a large 322m tanker under the leadership of Hyundai Group Chairman Chung Ju-young. For the first time in the world's construction history, water barrier construction using oil tankers was attempted.
The so-called 'Jeong Ju-Young Construction Method' project that surprised the world was completed by shortening the construction period from 45 months to just 9 months. Newsweek and New York Times were introduced and inquiries from world-class companies in developed countries followed.
“If you do not come up with ideas and test them yourself, but find answers only in books and rely only on authority, creativity will die. Without creativity, there will be no epochal changes,” said Chung Ju-young, chairman of Hyundai Group
I will talk about Samsung Group, South Korea's leading company.
Samsung is now the No. 1 mobile phone market share in South Korea, but it was not like that from the beginning. In 1993, when Samsung's mobile phone Anycall came out, Motorola, the No. 1 mobile phone market in Korea, was the U.S. company.
At that time, Samsung's mobile phone had a defect rate of 21,8%, and the market share was likely to be ruined. Samsung Chairman Lee Kun-hee took special measures in a shocking situation in which one out of ten was defective.
In March 1995, a Samsung Anycall cell phone was retrieved, smashed with a hammer and burned. At that time, the burnt products reached around 20 billion won, but Samsung's mobile phones significantly improved the defect rate, ranking first in the South Korean mobile phone market in August of that year.
Samsung Chairman Lee Kun-hee made Samsung a world-class company with a declaration in Frankfurt, Germany, "Change everything except your wife and children," and a new management represented by quality-oriented management.
There have been many trials and errors before Samsung became the world's No. 1 company. The 1990s was not the world's No. 1 company.
As Chairman Lee Kun-hee said, Samsung changed everything except for his wife and children. It has become a world-class company because it has adapted well to change.
If the water isn't moving, it'll rot. Both people and companies should adapt well to change.
As seen in Darwin's Origin of Species, there is a struggle for survival among living things, and those that are well adapted to the environment survive and those that are not adapted to the environment are eliminated.
Animals who adapt well to change survive. The same goes for companies. I also think education is the same.
I also went through a lot of changes in my education activities in the past 30 years. Educational activities also had to adapt to the rapid changes in the industrial environment. Using school classes and after-school activities, students were trained to adapt to the rapidly changing industry changes.
For example, I switched from mechanical drafting (hand drafting) to AutoCAD (two-dimensional design), and changed to three-dimensional design and a 3D printer.
Modern society is a digital age. A lot of technology comes out frantically. A flexible way of thinking that can adapt to changes is required of modern people.
