Career in Tourism
| Prof. Nada Ratkovic - 01 Apr 2023

Tourism is one of the largest and most dynamic industries in today’s global economy, Like a set of different phenomena, tourism is the system that connects numerous economic branches and activities. Accelerated economic development is conditioned by the development of technology and automation which largely replace human work, in tourism. Compared to other sectors of the economy, tourism is the fastest-growing area. The intensity of work within the tourism sector is considered a significant source of employment and job creation. As a result of changing tourist activities, creating new and disappearing types of tourism lead to changes in the labor market.
The question arises to what extent it is possible to determine which jobs are a consequence of the development of tourism and the exact number of required employees. Trends in tourism change from year to year. Successfully responding to the dynamics of tourism trends is possible only by encouraging young people to develop a career in tourism, and by getting to know the opportunities and challenges that a career in tourism provides.
Today there are various types of tourism: rural, cultural, thematic, adventure, religious, round trips, health, congress, and scientific tourism where the career can be built. The biggest question is which study today guarantees a job in tourism tomorrow. So, young people are the key to success in tourism, but success requires competence, expertise, and skill. To build the careers of young people, the synergy of the education system and the profession is necessary. Likewise, it is necessary to follow current trends in the market, as well as to actively adjust working conditions to the demands of young generations. Developing a career in the tourism sector requires new interdisciplinary knowledge and skills that can create a good foundation for learning.
Quality education is needed in hotel-tourism vocational schools and universities to give future experts and leaders in tourism, a good foundation, and a broad picture. Modernization of vocational education is necessary for tourism professions. The question arises as to which studies today guarantee a job in tourism tomorrow. Today, there are many tourism and management studies, with interdisciplinary curricula that offer theoretical knowledge and professional practice through their programs. However, the goal is to find a study that will help you learn how to recognize trends. Specialist studies are not enough to acquire knowledge and build a career. For today’s young people to be ready for new challenges, studies must enable the development of additional skills, hard and soft, digital, organizational, entrepreneurial, and people management skills. Practice is very important to become a good expert in tourism. Learning through practice, seasonal jobs, and the simplest jobs during studies can help a lot in further building your career. However, it should be noted that education does not end with graduation. Tourism is a dynamic industry that constantly develops and adapts to new challenges, and constantly presents new and unexpected situations to people who want to build a career in it, whether on the domestic or international market.
Thus, in the future, one of the challenging areas will be niche tourism, and people who decide to work in that area will have to be very creative and offer clients something they have never had the opportunity to experience anywhere. The possibilities are endless, and quality education in the field of economics, entrepreneurship, or tourism is the main basis for a successful entry into this field.
Sustainable tourism consultants are also increasingly in demand. These are experts who advise tourism companies on how to do business more sustainably, that is, how to offer visitors something new. This includes, above all, eco-tourism, rural tourism, ethical tourism, volunteering, and individual travel. Experts dealing with sustainable tourism must on the one hand understand and know economics and entrepreneurship, and on the other hand, know what sustainable business is and how to realize it. Also, they must be ready to research the market and follow legal provisions regarding sustainable development and green tourism.
Smart tourism is the future of tourism and includes the concept of the “smart way” in which it is possible to improve the competitiveness, efficiency, and sustainability of business in tourism. And it is all through the use of technological innovations, using a mobile application, scanning a QR code, and virtual guides on the screen of a tablet or mobile phone. Smart tourism has no limits because every innovation improves and brings something new. However, to engage in smart tourism, certain digital skills are crucial for programs.
And today very important marketing in tourism. Advertising is the best method to attract visitors. The development of mobile phones and social networks has completely changed the marketing industry. Most advertising campaigns now take place in digital form - through online ads, personalized offers in the form of newsletters, but also influencers who advertise a destination or service. There are many jobs related to influencer marketing - such as writing posts or blogs to order, managing profiles on social networks, photographing destinations, producing promotional materials, and working in marketing agencies that do all this for their clients.
In any case, with the development of smart and digital tourism, there will be an increasing emphasis on new jobs that require good knowledge of economics, marketing, and tourism, of course in combination with other specific skills. Therefore, the first step should be to enroll in a study program that will enable you to acquire the necessary knowledge and skills but will also allow you to test newly acquired skills in practice. Teachers and mentors must continuously advocate for investing in young people and be a support in building their career path because it is undeniable that young people represent the future of our tourism.
